How to stay sane during a home renovation: A guide to keeping on top of your mental health & wellbeing

How do you stay sane during a home renovation? Social media will have you believing that renovations are an easy project and take no longer than a couple of months to complete.

When in reality, living in a renovation house can take every last bit of energy and life out of you, it can feel like running uphill with skis on whilst carrying a bucket of water on your head.

Really, although renovating a home sounds like a beautiful thing to do, most end up feeling like the end is never in sight and that their sanity and their money are just running down the drain.

But, renovating your home or taking on home improvement projects doesn’t need to be all doom and gloom, it can be bring an endless amount of fun, enjoyment and satisfaction

To help you understand some tips and tricks of how to keep on top of you mental health whilst taking on your renovation or home improvement project, we asked our community of Home Improvement Stuff renovators what they do so and they said;

1. Paige – @atnumber100 on Tik Tok & Instagram has the following recommendations;

Put on your favourite playlist!

“Myself and Karl always have our favourite playlist blasting out loud, a mixture of Hozier and the gorillaz. An eclectic mix I know!”

Keep snacks close by

“Having our favourite sweets there which has to be jelly snakes by the natural collection”

Tidy up and keep the space clean

“Even though this is hard work…but we always leave the house as tidy as possible, so when we are next at the house we don’t go crazy over the mess, luckily we aren’t doing anything structural”

Keep a photo album on your phone

“Another thing that does keep me sane through our renovation is that I made an album on my phone where all renovation pictures and videos go and if i’m feeling deflated I look back on what the room started as/looked like and it’s a huge wake up call, like we’ve actually done so much. Not to mention we both work full time jobs!”

We love these actionable tips, often it’s the little things that we take for granted in life and they are stripped from us when we are taking on a renovation, so keeping your favourite music on and keep snacks close by will be a huge benefit when trying to stay sane during your renovation project.

2. Jack & Charlotte – Raunds Renovation – Have the following recommendations to keep you sane during your home improvement projects;

Create a dust and mess free zone

“One thing that has really helped us unwind in the evenings, especially as we’re living in our renovation is to create a dust free and mess free zone where you can relax in the evenings, it’s so important to have a space where you can shut the door and forget about everything else ou have going on in the house. A space where you can get into your comfies and get in front of the TV.”

If you’re struggling with a job, get some success

“One thing we’ve lived by is to get some success, by this we mean that if we are struggling with a project and it’s not time sensitive like plastering or concrete etc, we will go and do something completely different where we can get some success and feel like we’ve achieved something. This is a huge help that keeps us sane when doing our renovation as you get the small little dopamine hit and joy of actually completing a small job.”

“Yes this means you start extra jobs but sometimes you just need to get away from the problem and start something else to clear your head!”

Be goofy and have a laugh

We’ve always lived by the rule of always having a laugh, even in our darkest moments where nothing is going right and you just want to set everything on fire and burn the place down, we’ve always found the time to be goofy and make each other laugh. It’s the best medicine.

3. Emma from @projectshrublands on Tik Tok

“I think you should just take some time out to do normal stuff, like see friends, go on a date night, go on a nice walk with a family member whatever it is just get out of the house and more importantly whilst you’re out… DO NOT TALK ABOUT THE HOUSE…

It feels like all our conversations are about the house/money/renovating and it’s nice to forget it for a while and do something not related to the house once in a while”

4. Ciara & Will from @theeastlondonreno on Instagram;

“One thing we’ve been doing each weekend is having a dedicated stop time and then spending 30-45 minutes tidying up so we don’t run ourselves into the ground.

That’s something we’ve been guilty of in the early days, working 12-14 hour days and then going to bed with the house in a state!”

Conclusion

Every day there are more and more people embarking on renovation, DIY & home improvement  projects, whether that be updating your kitchen, replacing your old sofas and lounge decoration or completely ripping out the house, there’s always going to be days where stress levels are high.
